Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis OBE, FNA,[5] FASc,[6] FRS[1] (29 June 1893 – 28 June 1972) was an Indian Bengali scientist and applied statistician. He is best remembered for the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure, and for being one of the members of the first Planning Commission of free India. He made pioneering studies in anthropometry in India. He founded the Indian Statistical Institute, and contributed to the design of large-scale sample surveys.[1][7][2][8] For his contributions, Mahalanobis has been considered the father of modern statistics.[9]

كان براسانتا شاندرا ماهالانوبيس [البنغالية: OB মহলানবিশ] OBE ، FNA ، FASc ، FRS (29 يونيو 1893 - 28 يونيو 1972) عالمًا بنغاليًا هنديًا وعالم إحصاء تطبيقي. من الأفضل تذكره عن مسافة ماهالانوبيس ، وهو إجراء إحصائي ، ولأنه أحد أعضاء لجنة التخطيط الأولى للهند الحرة. قام بدراسات رائدة في علم الإنسان في الهند. أسس المعهد الإحصائي الهندي ، وساهم في تصميم استطلاعات عينة واسعة النطاق. لمساهماته ، كان يعتبر Mahalanobis والد الإحصاءات الحديثة في الهند.
