A team at the University of Barcelona studied how electronic music affects brain activity and perceptions of unity. They played one-minute tracks to participants at three tempos — 1.65 Hz (around 99 BPM), 2.25 Hz (around 135 BPM), and 2.85 Hz (around 171 BPM). EEG scans showed the slowest tempo (1.65 Hz) triggered stronger neural entrainment compared to the fastest, and listeners rated it higher for feelings of unity.
Reaction times and overall executive performance didn’t vary with tempo, but the strength of brainwave synchronization to the music correlated with certain cognitive responses. The results suggest that slower tempos can intensify feelings of connectedness and potentially shape the listener’s state of consciousness.
