Hussar helmet from The Wawel Royal Castle – National Art Collection. The Hussar szyszak is a helmet that was commonly worn by the troops of the Polish Hussars. It was similar to the pappenheimers that were used in Western Europe. The helmet was often decorated with brass trimmings and appliqué motifs stamped with geometrical ornaments, similar to the Hussar armor. There were several variations of this helmet, including those with a tip on the top, a high crest, or fan-like wings on the skull. The latter variation became particularly popular during the first half of the 18th century, during the reign of the Saxons.
