I used to think a transformer was just that big box hanging on an electric pole-until I discovered how many types there actually are in the power system world
From power transformers in massive substations to distribution transformers lighting up our homes and from instrument transformers (CT & PT) used for protection and metering to single-phase transformers powering rural areas -each plays a vital role in delivering safe and efficient electricity. In this post, I've shared a visual guide covering the types of transformers, their voltage levels, and applications-explained in a simple and clear way for students, engineers, and enthusiasts

Earthing and Grounding
⚡ 1. Definition
Term Definition
Earthing Connecting the non-current-carrying parts (like equipment body or frame) of the electrical system to the earth (soil) to prevent electric shock.
Grounding Connecting the current-carrying parts (like the neutral of a system) to the ground (reference point) for circuit stability and fault current return path.
⚙️ 2. Purpose
Earthing Safety of humans and equipment prevents electric shock if insulation fails.
Grounding Stabilizes the voltage during normal operation and provides a path for fault or lightning current.
🧰 3. Typical Connection
Connection Example
Earthing Metallic body of motor, transformer, or appliance → Earth electrode/rod.
Grounding Neutral point of transformer/generator → Ground (for system reference).
🌍 4. Regional Usage
Region Term Used
UK / Europe / India “Earthing” for both safety and system connections.
USA / Canada “Grounding” is the general term for both.
⚡ 5. Example to Remember
If you touch a washing machine and don’t get shocked that’s Earthing protecting you.
When a transformer neutral is connected to ground for system stability — that’s Grounding.
🔑 In Simple Words
> Earthing = Safety (equipment body to earth)
Grounding = System reference (neutral or circuit point to ground)
