🇬🇧 Alone in Al-Ula

We never imagined experiencing Al-Ula like this. Normally, people from all over the world travel here — to see the ancient tombs of Hegra, the massive sandstone formations, and the oases hidden in the Saudi desert.

But because of the war, everything was suddenly empty 😳
No tour groups. No crowds.

It was both beautiful and somehow unsettling, especially because you could clearly see that everything had been built for tourism.
A place that is usually full of visitors suddenly felt silent, almost like the end of the world 🤔

We made a few zombie apocalypse jokes… and then just enjoyed the peace and quiet 😉

🇩🇪 Allein in Al-Ula

Wir hätten niemals gedacht, Al-Ula so zu erleben.
Normalerweise reisen Menschen aus der ganzen Welt hierher — zu den uralten Felsengräbern von Hegra, den gewaltigen Sandsteinformationen und den Oasen mitten in der saudischen Wüste.

Doch wegen des Kriegs war plötzlich alles leer 😳
Keine Reisegruppen und Menschenmassen.

Es war gleichzeitig wunderschön und irgendwie unheimlich, da man schon sieht, daß alles auf Tourismus ausgelegt ist.
Ein Ort, der sonst voller Besucher ist, wirkte plötzlich still wie nach dem Ende der Welt 🤔

Wir haben ein paar Zombie-Apokalypse Witze gemacht und danach die Ruhe genossen 😉

🇬🇧 Between Mountains and Sea
We kept driving south from Abha along the mountains of Saudi Arabia — between the high peaks of the Asir Mountains and the hot Tihama plain near the Red Sea.
And the further we drove, the more unreal the landscape became 😍

Winding mountain roads clung to steep cliffs, fog drifted through the valleys, and every corner revealed another incredible view. At times, Saudi Arabia suddenly didn’t feel like Saudi Arabia at all.

Around Jebel Shada, huge dark granite formations rose above small mountain villages and terraced fields. And then there were those endless roads disappearing into the clouds — simply breathtaking.
Most people only think of desert when they hear Saudi Arabia, but the country actually has an incredible amount of mountains 😜

🇩🇪 Zwischen Bergen und Meer
Wir sind von Abha aus immer weiter entlang der saudischen Bergwelt gefahren — zwischen den hohen Gipfeln des Asir-Gebirges und der heißen Tihama-Ebene am Roten Meer.
Und je weiter wir gefahren sind, desto unwirklicher wurde die Landschaft 😍

Serpentinenstraßen hingen an steilen Berghängen, Nebel zog durch die Täler und hinter jeder Kurve warteten neue Ausblicke. Manchmal fühlte sich Saudi-Arabien plötzlich überhaupt nicht mehr nach Saudi-Arabien an.

Rund um Jebel Shada standen riesige dunkle Granitfelsen zwischen kleinen Bergdörfern und Terrassenfeldern. Dazu diese endlosen Straßen durch die Wolken — einfach unglaublich schön.
Viele denken bei Saudi-Arabien nur an Wüste, aber es gibt erstaunlich viele Berge 😜

🇬🇧 Holiday on the Farasan Islands 😍

After a small motorcycle accident where the bike landed on me and I got a bit trapped and burned, I was in quite a lot of pain for a few days and needed some rest. Cruise-Willi also needed a bit of care 😜

Farasan island itself is pretty flat and rather unspectacular – no hills, no dramatic landscapes, just a quiet, flat island in the Red Sea.

But the water… is absolutely insane.

Even from the shore we could see blue-spotted stingrays, and even turtles were happily swimming around in the crystal-clear water. Snorkelling was honestly just incredible.

And because it was Ramadan, there was hardly anyone around 😃

🇩🇪 Urlaub auf den Farasan Islands 😍

Nach einem kleinen Motorradsturz, bei dem das Motorrad auf mir gelandet ist und mich etwas eingequetscht und verbrannt hat, war ich ein paar Tage voller Schmerz und brauchte erstmal Ruhe.
Auch Cruise-Willi wollte etwas gepflegt werden 😜

Die Farasan Insel selbst ist ziemlich flach und eher unspektakulär – keine Höhen, keine dramatischen Landschaften, einfach eine ruhige, flache Insel im Roten Meer.
Aber das Wasser… ist der absolute Wahnsinn 😍

Schon vom Ufer aus konnte man blau gepunktete Rochen sehen, und sogar Schildkröten sind fröhlich durch das klare Wasser gepaddelt. Schnorcheln war entsprechend einfach nur irre.
Und weil Ramadan war, war praktisch niemand unterwegs 😃

🇬🇧 Wadi Lajab 😍

After spending quite a while back out in the desert, it felt really good to finally see water again 😃

During Ramadan, we had the whole place completely to ourselves. No other people, just water running through the canyon and these huge rock walls all around us.

We probably would have kept walking much farther, but one pretty angry baboon made it clear that turning around was probably the better idea 😜🤣
Baboons have pretty long teeth, and we didn’t feel like arguing, so we decided to head back instead 🤣
Still really beautiful 😍

🇩🇪 Wadi Lajab 😍

Nachdem wir jetzt schon wieder eine ganze Weile durch die Wüste unterwegs waren, war es richtig schön, endlich mal wieder Wasser zu sehen 😍

Während des Ramadan hatten wir den ganzen Ort komplett für uns allein. Keine anderen Menschen, nur das Wasser im Canyon und diese riesigen Felswände um uns herum.

Eigentlich wären wir noch viel weiter gelaufen, aber ein ziemlich zorniger Pavian hat uns dann klargemacht, dass Umkehren wohl die bessere Idee ist 😜🤣
Paviane haben nämlich ziemlich lange Zähne – und wir hatten keine Lust auf Diskussionen. Also sind wir lieber wieder zurückgegangen 🤣
War trotzdem schön 😃

🇬🇧 Hima was one of the strangest places we visited in Saudi Arabia.
It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, but don’t expect visitor centers, signs, cafés, or really any infrastructure at all.

You basically just drive for hours through the desert, hoping you’re on the right track, hoping you’ll actually pass something cool, and hoping you’ll somehow end up where you wanted to go.
And that’s exactly what makes it so memorable.
The highlight for us was this incredible natural stone arch — a huge rock bridge standing out in the middle of all that emptiness.

Hima feels wild, remote, and completely untouched — less like visiting a famous heritage site and more like stumbling across something you were never really supposed to find.

Hima war einer der ungewöhnlichsten Orte, die wir in Saudi-Arabien besucht haben.
Es ist ein UNESCO-Welterbe – aber erwartet dort keine Besucherzentren, keine Schilder, keine Cafés und eigentlich überhaupt keine Infrastruktur.

Man fährt einfach stundenlang durch die Wüste, hofft, auf dem richtigen Weg zu sein, hofft, überhaupt an irgendetwas vorbeizukommen, und hofft, am Ende irgendwie dort anzukommen, wo man eigentlich hinwollte.
Und genau das macht diesen Ort so besonders.

Das Highlight für uns war dieser unglaubliche natürliche Steinbogen – eine riesige Felsbrücke mitten in all dieser Leere.
Hima fühlt sich wild, abgelegen und völlig unberührt an – weniger wie ein berühmtes Welterbe und mehr wie etwas, das man eigentlich gar nicht finden sollte.

🇬🇧 At the edge of the world

About 100 kilometers west of Riyadh, the plateau of the Tuwaiq Escarpment suddenly drops away — and in front of you there is simply… nothing. Just endless space, cliffs, and desert stretching all the way to the horizon.
Standing up there, you really get the feeling that the world just ends.

It’s hard to imagine that millions of years ago this place was once the floor of an ancient sea. Today, you look down from the cliffs onto a landscape that feels almost unreal. The Edge of the World lies at around 1,131 meters above sea level and is one of the country’s most spectacular natural landmarks.

Especially at sunset, the atmosphere up there feels completely surreal. You can clearly see from our faces how excited we were 😃

🇩🇪 Am Rand der Welt - the Edge of the World

Etwa 100 Kilometer westlich von Riyadh bricht das Plateau der Tuwaiq Escarpment plötzlich ab – und vor einem liegt einfach… nichts. Nur endlose Weite, Felsen und Wüste bis zum Horizont.
Man steht dort oben und hat wirklich das Gefühl, als würde die Welt einfach aufhören.

Kaum vorstellbar, dass hier vor Millionen von Jahren einmal ein Meeresboden war. Heute schaut man von den Klippen auf eine Landschaft, die fast unwirklich wirkt. Die Edge of the World liegt auf rund 1.131 Metern Höhe und gehört zu den spektakulärsten Naturzielen des Landes.
Vor allem zum Sonnenuntergang ist die Stimmung dort komplett surreal. An unseren Gesichtern sieht man eindeutig wie begeistert wir sind 😃
