GILGIT: Governor Gilgit-Baltistan Syed Mehdi Shah, Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan, and Force Commander FCNA laid floral wreaths at the Yadgar-e-Shuhada (Martyrsโ€™ Memorial) on the occasion of Gilgit-Baltistan Liberation Day on Saturday.

The ceremony was held to honour the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the 1947โ€“48 war for the liberation of Gilgit-Baltistan. The officials offered prayers for the souls of the martyrs and paid tribute to their courage and dedication.

Senior civil and military officials, along with representatives of various departments, were also present at the memorial ceremony.

The event marked the beginning of the regionโ€™s Liberation Day celebrations, observed every year on November 1 across Gilgit-Baltistan to commemorate the day when the local forces freed the region from Dogra rule.

GILGIT: On the occasion of Gilgit-Baltistan Liberation Day, the Special Communications Organization (SCO) paid tribute to the liberation heroes, people, culture, and landscape of the region.

As part of the celebration, SCO featured the patriotic song โ€œMain Gilgit-Baltistan Hoon,โ€ sung by Mubarak Ali Sawan from Gilgit-Baltistan, which encapsulates the spirit of unity and pride that marks the day.

Gilgit-Baltistan Liberation Day commemorates the historic uprising of November 1, 1947, when the people of Gilgit, under the command of local scouts and freedom fighters, liberated their region from Dogra rule and declared independence before acceding to Pakistan.

The day is observed annually across the region with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural events, and tributes to the heroes who played a vital role in shaping the regionโ€™s destiny.

The Indus River supports millions across China, India, and Pakistan, with nearly 90% of Pakistanโ€™s population dependent on it. However, climate change and rapid population growth are straining this vital resource. To address these challenges, ICIMOD partnered with Pakistanโ€™s Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, UNICEF Pakistan, and UN Women Pakistan to co-develop a basin-wide approach. This collaboration secured a USD 10 million Adaptation Fund project โ€“ Sustainable Actions for Ecosystems Restoration in Pakistan (SAFER Pakistan) โ€“ focused on early warning systems, nature-based water restoration, and empowering women, children, and youth.
