Mary took a pound of ointment of pure liquid nard [a rare perfume] that was very expensive, and she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped them with her hair. And the whole house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

The rare perfume Mary poured on Jesus’ feet in preparation for His burial was worth a year's wage for a common worker. It was indeed very precious especially if you are that common worker.

Now, what got my attention are several facts of this occasion. First, Mary whom Jesus delivered from seven demon possession has revelation about what Jesus keeps trying to say to His disciples when it comes to His departure (Crucifixion), her “anointing” Him in preparation for it discloses the idea.
Second, she spilled a very expensive perfume on Jesus. Now, you will only do that when you really love someone. Mary loved Jesus so much because she was greatly loved . It makes me wonder, how many of us who were loved deeply would care to give a year’s wage to advance His Kingdom on earth?
Third, she used her hair to wipe His feet. That is a very profound gesture of humility and submission in their culture and even in today’s culture. How many women will be willing to use their hair as a towel for one’s feet? It will be quite very hard to get a volunteer.

When you read and compare this same occasion with the other Gospels, the LORD made a promise after Mary gave this kind of offering, whenever the Good News is preached she will be mentioned.
