How to Choose the Right Pig Breed (Without Losing Money)
One mistake that quietly costs farmers money is choosing the wrong breed from the start.
Not because the pigs are bad, but because they donât fit the farmerâs situation.
Some people buy pigs because they are cheap, some because they are big, and others because âthatâs what everyone is raising.â
But breed selection shouldnât be based on any of that.
It should be based on what you want to achieve and what you can manage.
Start with your goal.
If your focus is breeding and producing more piglets, then breeds like Large White and Landrace are a good place to start. They are known for producing more piglets and taking care of them well.
They are also easier to find and more affordable, which makes them suitable for farmers starting with limited capital.
If youâre aiming for something more structured and can invest more, improved lines like TN70 or Camborough are built for performance.
They tend to give more consistent results in litter size, piglet survival, and overall growth.
Youâll usually notice the difference early, especially in the strength and uniformity of the piglets.
If your interest is more on meat production and finishing, then breeds like Duroc, Hampshire, or Berkshire come into play.
They are valued for growth and meat quality.
Some farmers combine both advantages by crossing these with Landrace or Large White.
That way, they get good litter size from the sow and better growth from the boar.
But hereâs something very practical many farmers are getting wrong right now,
A lot of people are rushing to buy Duroc because itâs trending.
Youâll see farmers paying very high prices for Duroc piglets, sometimes as much as âŚ450,000, simply because they believe they can also sell at that same price.
But when you ask why, the answer is usually not clear.
First, not all the pigs being sold as Duroc are actually pure Duroc.
These days, some people see any brown pig and call it Duroc.
Second, many donât consider their location and market.
If youâre in an area where farmers cannot afford to buy piglets at those high prices, who are you planning to sell to?
And if you end up raising them to market weight and selling to slaughter, they donât pay based on breed. A Duroc will be bought at the same rate as a Large White or Landrace.
So where is the extra money coming from?
In that kind of situation, what makes more sense is using a good Duroc boar to cross with your Landrace or Large White sows.
That way, you improve growth and meat quality without putting too much money at risk.
And beyond breed, one thing still remains constant,
If management is poor, no breed will save you.
Feeding, hygiene, housing, and consistency will always determine how well your pigs perform.
At the end of the day, the right breed is not the most expensive or the most talked about, itâs the one that fits your system and gives you results.
đ´ What breed are you currently raising, and how has it been performing for you? Or if youâre just starting, which one are you considering? Let me know in the comments đ
