Where the Pines Waited
(06-25-25)
The forest wore a silence
too heavy to bear,,
as if even the wind
had forgotten your name.
Mist hung like grief between trees,
and I walked where we once stood,
your scent like pines
still clings in my mind.
A sparrow stirred on a branch
where your laughter once lingered.
It did not sing.
Not today.
Perhaps it, too, remembered
the warmth we lost.
I whispered your promise
to the bark of a pine,
it did not answer,
but it shivered.
And so did I.
I sat by the stream we named
in that language only we spoke,
a hush between souls.
But the water no longer mirrored us.
Only a sky too pale
and a too empty boy.
If you return,
bring the sun.
These woods have grown tired
of missing your hands.
