A Lady from Brgy. Tumarbong: Kwentong Roxas, Palawan.

Growing up in Tumarbong, our house was near the seashore, surrounded by beaches, islands, and mountains. As an only child, I didn't really appreciate how beautiful my place is because they were simply part of my everyday life. Our mornings usually began with the sound of roosters while the nights were quiet with the soft sounds of birds.

The sea was always close to our lives because my father was a fisherman. He also worked in some island resorts in Tumarbong, Roxas, Palawan, like "Coco Loco" now called Modessa Island Resort and "Kalagsingan" which is now known as Banwa Private Island Resort, which
helped support our family. He even built boatsโ€” some were for fishing, while others were used to transport workers going to Banwa, and one of those was the biggest boat my tatay made, the
"MBCA Keah"(motorbangka). Sometimes he would ask me to "ipalaot ang bangka,โ€ with my friend which means moving the boat into deeper water to avoid grounding when low tide.

Throughout my childhood, we often spent time at the nearby beaches and islands with family and friends. We would swim, gather shellfish along the shore, or what we locally call โ€œpanginginas,โ€ and sometimes catch fish using small nets along the shore. Aside from the beaches and islands, our place is also surrounded by mountains. One of them is Mt. Apurawan, a Mount Calvary, where people from different barangays in Roxas, Palawan come every Holy Week to climb the mountain as part of their tradition and devotion, and also to see the beautiful
view from the top, overlooking the sea and nearby areas of Tumarbong.

Looking back, I realize these memories were not just ordinary momentsโ€” they are part of what makes Tumarbong special. The sea and mountains that felt normal to me were extraordinary to
many. I also saw how tourism helped the communityโ€” when Banwa was still starting and building its villas, they needed a lot of manpower. I still remember how my father helped recruit
some of our neighbors and ka-barangays to work on the island so they could also have jobs and earn income for their families.

Being part of the community as Mutya ng Tumarbong in 2023, I had the chance to share the culture and beauty of our hometown with others. Selling local products was also an important part of life in our community, and one of the well-known products in our area is kasoy (cashew). I also embraced this small entrepreneurial spirit by selling cashew nuts to my schoolmates, learning along the way how to share a part of Tumarbong with others.
Seeing visitorsโ€™ reactions and realizing the uniqueness of our home inspired me to pursue tourism. Growing up surrounded by islands, beaches, and mountains made me dream not only
of traveling far as a future flight attendant, but also of having the chance to work in the beautiful island destinations of Roxas someday.

By keeping the beaches and islands sustainable and working collaboratively with the government, I hope the next generation of Roxas will also have the chance to enjoy and protect these beautiful parts of our home and inspire more people to visit.
