Today marks one century, two decades, and eight years — a total of 128 years of freedom from almost 333 years of Spanish colonization. Though some of our Filipino heroes are now forgotten, the true value of Independence Day must always remain in our hearts.
Since 1898, the Philippine flag was unfurled for the first time, proclaiming our country's freedom under General Emilio Aguinaldo. Yet today, many treat this commemoration as nothing more than a day off. Independence Day is more than a celebration. It reminds us that Filipino revolutionaries, soldiers, and civilian leaders fought across two major conflicts to secure our nation's freedom. When this history is forgotten, the entire country becomes unaware of the price of liberty.
Every June 12 reminds us that the freedom we enjoy today was bought with the blood shed by those who came before us. According to Central Philippine University, Independence Day is far more than a chapter in history; it is a call to action for everyone to support one another and to speak out. Its story is not just a lesson taught in school — it is concrete proof that Filipinos can win battles others deem impossible.
Some may say this holiday is not serious, not important, or not worth celebrating. But this mindset proves that they fail to honor those who chose dignity over safety. When people ignore the history and significance behind it, Filipinos do not only show ingratitude to the heroes behind this victory — they also show a lack of love for our country.
Celebrations may fade, but the history and contribution of Independence Day can be imprinted in every generation's mind when it is shared and valued. Holidays should always be remembered for their importance, not just because they mean a day off from work or classes. To make this indelible, we must always remember: this day is not just a holiday.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has retained the requirement of a general average of 90 or above for learners to qualify for the Academic Excellence Award under DepEd Order No. 15, s. 2026.
Under the revised guidelines, learners must also obtain no final grade lower than 80 in any learning area and must be free from any derogatory record or disciplinary sanction during the school year.
To promote fairness and reduce unhealthy competition among learners, awardees will continue to be listed in alphabetical order rather than by rank.
DepEd said the updated policy seeks to address concerns related to grading and recognition practices, including grade inflation and the excessive reliance on transmutation. The guidelines emphasize consistent academic performance, responsibility, and holistic learner development.
Aside from the Academic Excellence Award, schools may also confer other forms of recognition, including the Leadership Excellence Award and the Excellence in a Specific Learning Area Award, among others.
The policy forms part of DepEd's efforts to ensure that learner recognition remains meaningful, equitable, and reflective of both academic achievement and character.
