Many people find it ironic that Tony Iommi, the legendary guitarist of Black Sabbath, is often seen wearing a cross necklace. Since the band is widely known for its dark themes, occult imagery, and heavy sound, some assume that the symbol contradicts the image the band portrays. However, the story behind the cross is actually quite simple and reflects the band’s true intentions.

Black Sabbath emerged in the late 1960s and quickly became known for their dark, ominous music. Their songs often explored themes such as fear, evil, war, and the supernatural. Because of this, many listeners and critics assumed that the band promoted satanic ideas. In reality, the members themselves repeatedly denied these claims. They explained that their music was more like horror storytellingβ€”similar to watching a scary movieβ€”rather than an endorsement of evil or occult practices.

The cross necklaces worn by the band members, including Tony Iommi, were reportedly given to them early in their career by their manager. The idea was that the crosses would serve as a symbol of protection. At the time, the band was receiving criticism and accusations of being satanic because of their lyrics and album imagery. Wearing the cross signified the opposite message: protection from evil rather than support for it.

In fact, many of Black Sabbath’s songs actually warn about evil rather than celebrate it. Their music often portrays evil forces as frightening or destructive, emphasizing the consequences of corruption, war, or moral decline. This perspective shows that the band’s dark aesthetic was largely artistic and thematic, not a reflection of their personal beliefs.

Tony Iommi’s cross necklace therefore represents something personal and symbolic rather than contradictory. It reflects the band’s original intentionβ€”to explore dark themes in music while still recognizing the idea of protection from those same forces. What may appear ironic at first glance is actually part of the complex identity that helped shape the early image of heavy metal.

In the end, the cross and the dark imagery of Black Sabbath coexist because the band’s music was never about worshipping darkness. Instead, it was about confronting it, telling stories about it, and turning those themes into powerful and influential music. 🀘

They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor, yeah
