The nation honors National Artist Honorata “Atang” dela Rama on her 124th Birth Anniversary.
Atang dela Rama embarked on her remarkable journey in theater, enchanting audiences with her acts in Spanish zarzuelas such as Mascota, Sueño de un Vals, and Marina. Among the myriad of roles she portrayed, the character of an orphan in ‘Pangarap ni Rosa’ held a special place in her heart, allowing her to showcase her talent infused with heartfelt emotion.
Dela Rama was firmly convinced that both the sarswela and the kundiman were essential representations of the Filipino soul. Her dedication went beyond the stage; she generously shared her musical prowess by performing kundiman and various traditional Filipino melodies for countless indigenous communities, including the Aetas of Zambales, the Bagobos of Davao, and diverse Lumad groups across Mindanao.
