Industrial engineering is involved with the design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, information, equipment, and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and ability in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences coupled with the concepts and methods of engineering analysis and design, to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.

This expertise can be applied across many types of sectors ranging from the mining industry, oil & gas industry, transportation industry, service industry, and so on. Industrial engineering may also be employed in any system whether it is industrial or not. Therefore, this area is also often referred to as systemic engineering. The manufacturing system is most typically utilized as a model system since this system is the most concrete, observable, and tangible. IE has a flexible personality. That's just how it is.
