I have to apologize to my Cambodian friends but I need to address the “elephant in the room”.
A hollow victory is where someone wins something in name, but are seen not to have gained anything by winning. There is nothing wrong with it and it is within the boundaries of the rules of the games they hosted.. But what does Cambodia Basketball get from it?
With practically no basketball culture to back up the piece of jewelry around your neck is to say the least, futile. I am not singling out Cambodia for this practice as other countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam have utilized heritage and naturalized players to reinforce their teams in the present and past.
Ethnicity and Sports is a delicate issue few will understand. In the modern world where migration is a thing, Representing a country is no longer just a birth right. An athlete can decide which people and culture he or she can represent by virtue of his or her affiliation and not the $ offered to them.
I guess by now people are realizing winning the Sea games Gold Medal is not a measure who has the best basketball culture in the region, but merely who has the best Investment.
