National Coaches Day began in 1972 when then President Richard M. Nixon signed a proclamation establishing October 6th as the day to celebrate those who serve as coaches in all sports.

The proclamation stated, “Coaches are highly qualified teachers - in high specialized fields. But more than that, they are friends and counselors who help instill in their players important attitudes that will serve them all their lives.”
