Iloilo, what a weekend! We flew in from Manila to support the National Bouldering Competition, and what a show it was. We appreciate everyone involved!
First and foremost, the competitors: SO. MUCH. ENERGY! It's such a pleasure to witness individuals try their hardest and go all out. In that kind of setting, it's inspiring how competition can bring out one's best performance. My favorite part was watching climbers stablize themselves at the top...The anticipation of knowing whether they had control, and once they confirm they do, their joy erupts and electrifies.
Routesetters: Well done! A huge applause to the tournament director, setters, judges, marshalls, and the entire Technical Team, who worked tirelessly to deliver an atmosphere that is enjoyable not just for the climbers, but also for the audiences (in-person and online - ganon na ngayon!) The grind that goes behind staging an event is not as visible as what competitors go through, but something that equally requires dedication and wisdom, that only comes with years of experience.
And to this growing Filipino climbing community...It was a new vantage to be in the audience seat for the whole duration (not a competitor nor an official this time around), and I did enjoy the view. To be able to savor the suspense of each round, problem and attempt; to observe different ways nerves are managed; to share in problem solving (without actually having to stress my mind and body, haha); to unite in screams with the rest of the crowd: it's a different kind of joy. And to see old faces, and notice an exponential number of new ones...The possibilities feel endless.
Hats off to for welcoming the challenge of hosting a Nationals, and for accommodating all the wild climbers from all over the country.
