Convicted prisoner hopes to reunite with his kids.
A prisoner convicted for murder and serving a 30-year sentence, hopes he would be considered for parole after serving one third of his sentence.
Mulumba Lumbi, 66, of Imane village, Kagua, in Southern Highlands province was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment by the Waigani National Court on August 14, 2002 for murdering his own wife.
“I am getting old in prison and I hope they release me on parole to see my seven kids who are out there on their own,” Lumbi said yesterday at the Bomana Correctional Institution when preparing to face the 8th Parole Board Meeting.
He said he regretted committing the offence and deserved to be in prison but had been rehabilitated in the past 18 years in prison and was prepared to reunite with his kids if released on parole.
He said he had established good terms with the relatives of his late wife and had expressed remorse for his actions that caused pain not only to the relatives of the victim but his kids who have lost their mother.
“My relatives also paid some compensation to the relatives of my late wife and I hope those reasons could enable me for parole.
“I am not a violent person and never thought I would be in prison in my lifetime. However, the unthinkable happened because I was only a human being and quickly reacted to the situation at the time by taking the law into my own hands.
“I was furious because my wife deserted me and our children and committed adultery so I lost temper and attacked her that resulted in her death,” Lumbi said.
He said he had learnt a lot while in prison about life and how to become a decent person in the society.
“I often pray and ask the good Lord for his forgiveness all the time. I hope to get into a ministry and proclaim the word of God and live a decent life if I’m released on parole,” Lumbi said.
