It is an interesting phenomenon.. the current frenzy of media attention in the Netherlands about the unwelcome, unnecessary and interfering doula...

Here is the thing. Doula support is evidence base care.
The interest in having a doula is increasing because there is need for continuous support. The evidence says it improves the birthing persons experience and reduces the chance of interventions. NOT because we intervene in medical care. Often simply because calm, continuous physical and emotional support from someone who is not a member of the medical team reduces the chance that interventions are needed. Birth is a physiological process that can easily be helped or hindered by those providing care. Which also makes it paramount that we form a supportive team to offer individualised and respectful care.

Perhaps situations that are more complex for providers and doulas is when clients are well informed, clear they want their voice heard, and may have needs that are outside of the standard protocols. The doula can then be seen as "interfering" when she facilitates and supports open communication between a client and care provider. I support the birthing person in their right to make their own decisions about their body and baby.

As professionals we, like any other are not above scrutiny. I would encourage any birthing person and any birth professional to have an open dialogue with a doula if the care and communication were not a positive experience. And the professional association of doulas (NBvD Doula Nederland) is also there if feedback or a complaint is warranted. We can only improve our work and our working relationships through open and transparent dialogue.

How was your experience working with me? My door is always open for feedback and discussion. I also promise that after every birth I attend, self reflection is part of my process. I learn and grow with each family I support.

When doulas, midwives, obyns and nurses are all working together for and with the labouring person (and partner), something changes. There is trust and a feeling of teamwork, which serves the woman giving birth.
