Have you guys ever seen two clubs come together to release the same statement? 😂
York City and Rochdale FC have jointly released a statement asking the English FA to do something about promotion from the National League (5th division).
Here’s what’s going on:
York City are 1st with 107 points, while Rochdale are 2nd with 105 points—and both teams still have one final match to play tomorrow.
According to the current rules, only the team that finishes 1st gets automatic promotion. The team in 2nd place has to join teams from 3rd to 7th in the playoffs.
What’s frustrating both clubs is this: after earning over 100 points, one of them could still miss out on automatic promotion and be forced into the playoffs with teams that didn’t come close to their performance. And in the end, only one team from the playoffs gets promoted.
So both clubs are protesting, asking for a “3-up” system (not the sporty kind 😅). This would mean:
1st and 2nd get automatic promotion
3rd joins the rest in the playoffs
So the question is—do you think the current National League system is fair?
