A day at the airport

A few days ago, I arrived early for my Abuja to kano flight. While waiting, I went to use the washroom and met an elderly woman who had soiled herself. The cleaner was frustrated, overwhelmed and shouting, while mama looked confused and embarrassed.

I gently reminded the cleaner that some elders struggle with incontinence and don’t even know when it happens. We don’t know people’s stories, and sometimes all they need is patience. I gave her something and begged her to treat mama with kindness.

That moment taught me again: growing old is not a crime. Life is already hard for many elderly people in Nigeria. The least we can do is show them compassion, not ridicule.

We all pray to grow old. So let’s treat our elders the way we want to be treated when our own steps slow down.

Shin menene matsala, menene mafita? 🤔

Gaskiya tsufa rigace ta kowa babu wanda zai guje mata. Amma abin takaici shine yadda muke barin tsofaffinmu cikin mawuyacin hali. Sau da dama zaka ga tsoho ko tsohuwa suna tsince-tsince a hanya, ko kuma suna tattara ciyawa domin su samu abin amfani.

Amma mu matasa fa?
Maimakon mu yi tunanin gobe, yawanci rayuwarmu ta fi karkata wajen nishadi da sakaci. Matashi zai iya kashe dubu hamsin ko dari a wajen shakatawa, amma idan tsoho ya nemi taimako, sai kawai a miƙa masa ashirin ko hamsin. 😔

Shin wannan adalci ne?
Ko muna manta cewa gobenmu itace yau din tsofaffinmu.
Shin wannan rayuwa ce da zata gina mana al’umma?
Ko muna manta cewa yau da muke ƙarfi gobe za mu zama irin waɗanda muke wucewa ba tare da kulawa ba?
