A pinch point is any workplace location where a body part—most commonly hands or fingers—can be caught between two moving parts, a moving and a stationary part, or materials, causing injuries like bruises, lacerations, amputations, or death. Common hazards include conveyor belts, gears, doors, and heavy machinery, which require protective guards, proper training, and lockout/tagout procedures.
Key Aspects of Pinch Point Safety:
Definition: Locations where a person or body part can be trapped between moving/fixed objects.
Common Causes/Examples: Gears, pulleys, conveyors, rollers, doors, lids, forklifts, hydraulic presses, and heavy materials.
Injuries: Crushed fingers, amputations, lacerations, and fatalities.
Prevention Methods: Installing machine guards, implementing Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) during maintenance, keeping hands clear, avoiding loose clothing/jewelry, and maintaining situational awareness.
