PRESS RELEASE
The International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA Nigeria, Imo State Branch, strongly condemns the tragic r**e and murder of Miss Wendy Chinwendu Achumba, a 21-year-old student of the College of Nursing Sciences Umulogho, whose lifeless body was discovered in her room in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State.
FIDA Imo State describes the incident as cruel, barbaric, and a grave violation of the fundamental human rights and dignity of the deceased. The branch expresses deep sadness over the unfortunate incident and extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and the entire student community affected by this painful loss.
FIDA Imo State reiterates its unwavering commitment to the protection of women and girls against all forms of violence, abuse, r**e, and gender-based crimes. The association maintains that no society can thrive where the safety and dignity of women and young girls are continuously threatened.
In response to the incident, the Chairperson of FIDA Imo State, Mrs. Phil Amaefula, led members of the branch on a visit to the Imo State Police Command, where they were received and adequately briefed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, on the progress made so far in the investigation.
FIDA Imo State commends the efforts of the Imo State Police Command under the able leadership of Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, for the swift response and steps already taken towards ensuring that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.
The branch further assures the public that it will closely monitor the matter and provide every necessary legal support to ensure that justice is served. FIDA Imo State calls on security agencies to carry out a thorough, diligent, and timely investigation while urging members of the public with useful information to cooperate with the authorities.
FIDA Imo State also calls on government institutions, educational authorities, and relevant stakeholders to strengthen measures aimed at protecting students and creating safer environments for young women across the state.
Justice must prevail, and the life of Wendy Chinwendu Achumba must not be forgotten.

FIDA Nigeria, Imo State Branch held her first general meeting of the year on Wednesday, 28th January, and it was truly impactful. The meeting featured robust deliberations, with major highlights centered on the forthcoming Zonal Leadership Training, for which FIDA Imo State has the honour of hosting the South-East Zone. Members were adequately briefed on preparations, expectations, and the collective roles required to ensure a successful outing. The meeting reaffirmed the branch’s commitment to capacity building, leadership development, and effective service delivery.
