The Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), has officially warned that the widespread use of these locally fabricated machines is a significant "silent k!ller" in Nigeria.🙆♀️
Most local fabricators use unalloyed cast iron or scrap metals rather than food-grade stainless steel. These materials are highly susceptible to corrosion and wear.✅️
During the grinding process, the heavy friction between the "grinding plates" causes them to wear out rapidly.☺️
Tiny iron filings and heavy metals like lead, chromium, and cadmium chip off and mix directly into your food (peppers, corn, beans, etc.).
Unlike organic food, your body cannot digest these metallic particles. Instead, they accumulate in your vital organs over time.
The kidneys act as a filter, and when they try to process these heavy metals, it leads to nephropathy (kidney damage) and eventual failure.
The liver stores these toxins, leading to inflammation, cell damage, and hepatotoxicity.
High levels of heavy metals in the bloodstream are linked to hypertension and various cardiovascular diseases.
FIIRO is urging Nigerians to move away from these cast-iron machines. The safer alternative is to use equipment made from food-grade stainless steel, which does not corrode or shed toxic metal particles into food.
