On this day in 1989, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
It was the result of years of pressure after two world wars exposed how deeply children were failed. The labour, abuse and exploitation said it all. The 1959 Declaration tried to outline their rights, but without legal weight it couldn’t do much.
By the 70s and 80s, the world had seen enough trafficking, exploitation, and wartime abuse. This led to a binding treaty that set clear standards for protection, education, healthcare, and dignity.
It became the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history. It was a reminder that protecting children is all of our responsibility.
At LightEd, we take that responsibility seriously by providing clean, accessible energy to underserved communities.
When children have light, they can learn safely, study longer, and hold on to opportunities that darkness usually steal.

Energy poverty is a silent drain on people’s lives. In 2024, Statisca stated that about 737 million people worldwide still lack reliable electricity access. That's a huge chunk of the world's population.
Most of these people rely on the old school and extremely expensive methods like using fossil fuel to generate electricity. Those in energy-poor communities might end up paying more per hour of usable light than people who have a dependable grid.
But the cost is much more than monetary. Inhaling smoke and fumes from candles and diesel generators causes serious health issues like respiratory disease, eye problems, and even heart strain. In Nigeria alone, energy poverty is widespread. An MDPI study found a high multidimensional energy poverty index, especially in rural areas. For children and pregnant women, these risks are even greater.
When power is unreliable, learning, businesses, and safety all suffer. Too often, children can’t study after dark, shops shut early, equipment breaks down, and communities can’t plan for the future. That’s why LightEd Impact is working to eliminate energy poverty and provide clean energy for all.
