A letter addressed to the Chief of Army Staff has surfaced, accusing senior Nigerian Army officers, Major General G.S. Mohammed and Corporal A. Abubakar, of misconduct and assault. The legal petition, filed by Tom Uja & Co., demands the dismissal of the officers involved and seeks ₦150 million in compensation for the victims.
The victims, identified as Master Vershima Mker and Miss Lami Jennifer Iorvihi, allege they were attacked in Gwarinpa, Abuja, while preparing for their wedding. According to the petition, the couple had pulled over to allow the military convoy to pass when they were stopped and assaulted by Major General Mohammed and his entourage.

The letter claims that the couple suffered severe physical injuries, with Mr. Mker requiring specialized medical attention and Miss Iorvihi sustaining a fractured finger. It further alleges they were unlawfully detained at the Gwarinpa Police Station for eight hours, during which they were coerced into writing an apology to the Major General under duress before their release.
This incident adds to the growing list of cases where Nigerian security personnel, including military and police officers, have been accused of assaulting civilians—the very people they are sworn to protect. Such cases have raised concerns about a culture of impunity among security forces, where abuse of power often goes unpunished. Human rights advocates argue that this recurring issue highlights a systemic problem requiring urgent reform.

Tom Uja & Co. describes the incident as a grave violation of the victim’s constitutional rights, citing both physical and psychological trauma. The legal firm warns that if their demands are not met by November 18, 2024, they will release video evidence and pursue legal action against the Nigerian Army.
