Digitizing Yoruba Heritage: One Edit at a Time

The Yoruba people are custodians of one of Africa’s richest languages, histories, and traditions — a civilization that has shaped art, culture, and philosophy across centuries. Yet, much of our collective knowledge remains scattered, under-documented, or hidden from the digital space.

In response to this, we proudly unveil “Digitizing Yoruba Heritage: One Edit at a Time” — a Wikimedia-driven cultural project dedicated to preserving, promoting, and expanding Yoruba knowledge on the global digital landscape.

This initiative seeks to empower young people, scholars, culture enthusiasts, and digital volunteers to take active roles in documenting Yoruba heritage through Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and other open knowledge platforms.

Our Mission

To bridge the gap between Yoruba heritage and the digital world — ensuring that future generations can learn, access, and celebrate the beauty of Yoruba language, culture, and history anywhere in the world.

Salako: The Rare Breed, The Hidden Code, and the Living Identity Across Borders and Bloodlines—The Enigma of a Name

They say names are more than words—they are histories, destinies, and sometimes, entire worlds folded into a single sound. Salako is one such name. To some, it is a language whispered along the borders of Malaysia and Indonesia, threading through Sambas, Singkawang, Bengkayang, and Pontianak. To others, in the ancient compounds of Offa, Nigeria, it is a family name, rare and almost mystical, carried like a crown of identity. How can one word stretch across oceans, cultures, and meanings, yet remain whole? Strange, but true.

In Sarawak and West Kalimantan, Salako lives on the tongues of borderland people, their cultural code of survival and kinship. It marks belonging, a map written in sound. Meanwhile, in Yorubaland, the same word tells another story. Among the Ifon royal line of Osun State, Salako's family Ogun State, the Asalofa compound of Offa, Salako is not merely a surname—it is a riddle wrapped in heritage. Some elders interpret it as Sọ àlà kò—“to hang white cloth,” a gesture of peace, purity, and dignity. Others insist it was once a secret palace code, where salako meant “hair,” a symbol of strength and crown of individuality. Still, others whisper that it names a child born with rare traits, one destined to be different, to carry both blessing and burden.

Yoruba elders say: “Orúkọ rere sàn ju wúrà àti fàdákà”—a good name is better than gold and silver. To bear Salako is to carry more than letters; it is to wear the weight of rarity. Those who encounter a bearer of the name often confess a strange pull, as though they have stumbled upon a living archive, a story yet untold.

Is it coincidence that Salako emerges both as a language and as a family name continents apart? Or is it destiny, a thread woven by unseen hands that tie the borderlands of Borneo to the palaces of Yorubaland? Suspicion grows when you learn that *Salako* people often describe themselves as a “special breed”—interconnected, dignified, and uncommon. Yoruba wisdom warns us: “Àkúnlẹ̀yàn là ń yàn orúkọ, àkúnlẹ̀gbà là ń gbà á”—names are chosen with foresight, but their meaning unfolds with time.

And so, the story of Salako hangs between myth and truth, family and language, identity and enigma. The next time you meet someone bearing this rare name, pause before you speak. Show respect, for you are not just meeting a person, but a living proverb, a hidden bridge between worlds.

After all, some names are not just names—they are languages, bloodlines, and destinies. Salako is one of them.

The Yoruba Wikipedia Fans Club Offa has made history in the Wikimedia movement by achieving an extraordinary series of wins in less than 60 days, securing its place as one of the most impactful new contributor communities in Africa.

In an unprecedented sweep, club members claimed all three top positions for the month’s highest number of articles on Yoruba Wikipedia contributions — 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place — leaving no room for other editors. This achievement coincided with a remarkable triple crown victory:
