Last week, InnoTech Ideation Hub successfully concluded the AI in Higher Education workshop for staff of Kashim Ibrahim University (KIU), Maiduguri.

The workshop, organized by KIU in collaboration with BICTDA, focused on equipping academic and non academic staff with practical AI skills to enhance research, teaching, learning, and administrative efficiency.

Key topics covered:
• The impact of AI on higher education in Nigeria and globally
• Opportunities and challenges of AI adoption in academia
• Emerging AI policies and governance frameworks
• AI tools for productivity, research, and decision making

During the hands on sessions, participants explored leading AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Elicit, Consensus, Semantic Scholar, Research Rabbit, and NotebookLM.

Participants learned how to use these tools for literature reviews, research topic development, document summarization, evidence gathering, citation mapping, knowledge discovery, and improving workplace productivity.

One of the key takeaways from the workshop was the need to move beyond blanket bans on AI tools within academic institutions. Participants recognized that AI is becoming an integral part of education and research. Rather than prohibiting its use, institutions should focus on promoting ethical, responsible, and transparent AI adoption while developing appropriate policies and guidelines to govern its integration into teaching, learning, research, and administrative processes.

As AI continues to reshape education, initiatives like this are essential for preparing institutions and educators to harness its benefits responsibly and effectively.
