Sleep happens in stages.

Stage 1 and 2 are light sleep. Your body is resting, but not doing deep repair work yet.

Stage 3 is deep sleep. This is where your body repairs tissues, strengthens the immune system, releases growth hormone, and restores energy.

REM sleep is when the brain processes emotions, stores memories, and clears waste.

Deep sleep and REM are the stages that truly restore the body.

So what ruins deep sleep?

Eating late.

A heavy meal late at night keeps digestion active when the body should be slowing down for sleep. Your body focuses on digesting food instead of fully resting.

Blood sugar crashes.

If your dinner consists of bread, sugar, or refined carbs, blood sugar can rise quickly and then crash during the night.

That crash can trigger stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, waking you up around 2 or 3 a.m.

Alcohol.

Screens before bed.
