Why Do Catholics Pray to Mary? Doesn’t the Bible Teach That We Should Pray Only to God?

Many people misunderstand Catholic teaching on Mary. The Bible indeed teaches that worship belongs to God alone—but prayer and worship are not the same. In older English, the word “pray” simply meant “to ask” (as in “I pray thee”). Worship, on the other hand, involves offering sacrifice to God.

The Bible is not meant to be an exhaustive manual of every Christian practice. It records God’s revelation, but the Church also preserves Sacred Tradition—what St. Paul calls paradosis (1 Cor. 11:2; 2 Thess. 2:15; 3:6). These traditions do not contradict Scripture; rather, they flow from the same apostolic faith. And remember: it was the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, that recognized and compiled the books of the Bible in the first place. God continues to speak through history, creation, prophecy, and the lived experience of the Church.

Catholics pray to Mary in the sense of asking for her intercession, not worshiping her. We ask her to pray for us, just as Christians commonly ask one another for prayer.

Reasons Catholics Ask Mary to Pray for Us

1. Jesus gave Mary to all believers as a spiritual mother.
From the Cross, He said to the beloved disciple: “Behold your mother.”

2. Mary interceded at the Wedding at Cana.
Her request moved Jesus to perform His first miracle (John 2). This shows the power of her intercession.

3. She is the closest human person to Jesus.
Conceived through the Holy Spirit and full of grace, Mary’s prayers are powerful. As she herself said: “All generations shall call me blessed” (Luke 1:48).

4. Mary is alive, glorified in heaven.
Revelation 12 shows a woman crowned with glory—a sign of Mary’s heavenly role.

5. God knows we need a mother.
Jesus shares His own Mother with us so that she may comfort, guide, and help us draw closer to Him.

6. Her intercession does not rival Christ’s mediatorship.
Jesus is the one Mediator between God and humanity (1 Tim 2:5). But asking Mary to pray for us is no more a challenge to this than asking a friend or pastor to pray for us. She prays through Christ, not apart from Him.

Those who believe Mary’s prayers diminish Christ may simply misunderstand Catholic teaching—or may have developed an unnecessary fear of Marian devotion.

What the Church Teaches (Lumen Gentium, Vatican II)

The Second Vatican Council offers a balanced and deeply biblical understanding of Mary’s role:

Christ is the one Mediator.
Mary’s maternal intercession flows entirely from Christ’s work, depends on Him, and leads believers more deeply to Him (LG 60).

Mary is invoked as Advocate, Helper, and Mediatrix.
This does not add to or subtract from Christ’s unique role, but is a participation in His grace (LG 62).

Mary is honoured with a special, but not divine, veneration.
Her honour differs completely from the worship (adoration) given to God alone (LG 66). Marian devotion ultimately leads to a fuller love and understanding of Christ.
