Stabilizing The Naira: The Nigerian Experience Part 3.

Friends allow me welcome you to another brand new day!

It's the 3rd edition since we have been discussing this topic and there are matters arising.

Today, we shall explore how Nigeria can boost non-oil exports.

Here are some potential strategies:

1. Agricultural exports: Expanding cash crops like cocoa, sesame, and cashews.

2. Solid minerals Tapping into Nigeria's mineral wealth (e.g., gold, limestone).

3. Services sector: Growing IT, tourism, and creative industries.

4. Manufacturing for export: Boosting local production for regional markets.

*Addressing challenges:*

a *Infrastructure:* Invest in storage facilities, roads, and ports to reduce post-harvest losses and transport costs.

b. *Finance:*
Provide affordable credit to farmers and agribusinesses, and promote ag-tech innovations.

c. *Quality standards* Implement Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and certifications (e.g., Fairtrade, Organic) to access premium markets.

*Other agricultural export opportunities* :

a. *Ginger:*
Nigeria is a top global producer, with growing demand for dried and processed ginger.

b. *Yam* : Expanding exports to markets like the US and Europe, leveraging Nigeria's large production.

c. *Shea nuts* :: West Africa's shea butter is prized for cosmetics and food industries.

*Success stories from other African countries:*

- *Ethiopia's coffee*: Focused on quality, branding, and direct trade, Ethiopia boosted coffee exports and farmer incomes.

- *Ghana's cocoa*: Investments in certification, farmer training, and infrastructure helped Ghana become a premium cocoa producer.

- *Kenya's flowers*: Kenya's floriculture industry grew through targeted investments and air freight logistics.

With the right people on board and national commitment, we can also duplicate the success story of these Nations.

Stabilizing The Naira: The Nigerian Experience Part 2.

Friends, allow me welcome you to another brand new day!

Building on the progress so far, it is my pleasure to follow up on what I started a few weeks back

Nigeria's path forward involves tackling key challenges:

1.Boosting Non-Oil Exports:

Diversifying exports can strengthen FX inflows and reduce import dependency.

2.Managing Inflation:

Continued focus on controlling inflation (currently 15.10%) is crucial for currency stability.

3.Enhancing Transparency:

Implementing reforms like Executive Order 9 can improve governance and investor confidence.

To this end, the CBN's next moves might include the following:

- Further monetary policy rates (MPR) adjustments to balance inflation control and economic growth.

- Continued FX interventions to manage volatility.

- Encouraging diaspora remittances and foreign investments.

Stabilizing the Naira requires tackling inflation, boosting non-oil exports, and enhancing transparency. The CBN will likely continue MPR adjustments, FX interventions, and encouraging investments.

In the next edition, we shall look at Boosting Non-Oil Imports which is an essential tool in stabilizing the Naira.

Stabilizing the Naira: The Nigerian Experience

Friends allow me welcome you to another brand new day!

Since the inception of President BAT government, there has been a concerted effort to stabilize the Naira, amidst economic challenges.

In the same vein, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has implemented several measures to achieve this goal, including cutting the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by 50 basis points to 26.5% in February 2026.

This move signals confidence in the current disinflationary trend and has encouraged a steady flow of liquidity into the official window.

Key Factors Supporting Naira Stability:

- Improved Foreign Exchange Inflows: Steady crude oil production and increased foreign portfolio investments have strengthened the Naira.

- CBN Interventions: The central bank's dollar sales to Bureau de Change (BDCs) and other market interventions have helped reduce volatility.

- Fiscal Reforms: Executive Order 9, signed by President Bola Tinubu, directs oil and gas revenue to be remitted directly to the Federation Account, enhancing transparency and predictability.

Challenges Ahead:

- Rising public debt and fiscal dominance may undermine CBN's efforts.

- Inflation, though slowing, remains a concern at 15.10% in January 2026.

- Need for sustained policy coordination and structural reforms to boost economic growth and diversification.

Granted, the President BAT government's commitment to economic reforms and stabilization efforts has yielded positive results, but sustained efforts are necessary to maintain momentum and address underlying challenges.

Leadership and Corporate Accountability (Part 2)

Friends, allow me to welcome you to another brand new day!

We started out in the previous edition talking about Corporate accountability in relation to Leadership.

We established amongst other things that leaders set the tone for ethics, transparency, and responsibility, shaping organizational culture and stakeholder relationships.

In this concluding edition, permit me to consider the subject matter in more practical terms using 2 organisations as Case study.

Case Study 1:

Patagonia Inc. is a renowned American outdoor clothing brand known for sustainability. Founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973; based in Ventura, California.

Patagonia's Leadership and Corporate Accountability

- Leadership Role: Patagonia's founder, Yvon Chouinard, sets a tone prioritizing environmental responsibility and Hybrid transparency.

- Accountability Culture: Encourages
employees to speak up on environmental issues and supports activism.

- Stakeholder Trust: Balances business goals with environmental activism, e.g., donating 1% of sales to environmental causes.

- Transparency: Publishes environmental impact reports and supply chain information.

Case study 2 :

Volkswagen (VW), translated as "people's car," is a German multinational automobile manufacturer founded in 1937 and headquartered in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony.

Volkswagen's Accountability Lesson

- Lack of Accountability: Emissions scandal highlighted leadership's failure to prioritize ethics.

- Consequences: Massive fines, reputational damage, and leadership changes.

- Lesson: Strong leadership and accountability culture could have mitigated the crisis.

Effective leadership and corporate accountability drive long-term success.

Patagonia's proactive approach to environmental responsibility contrasts with Volkswagen's accountability failures, highlighting the importance of ethical leadership and transparency in building trust and sustainability.
