Stop bathing babies twice daily, doctors tell mothers - Healthwise 18/11/2025

Stop Signing “Received in Good Condition” Without Checking

Let me tell you something many people don’t realize until it’s too late.

Every time you collect a package, goods, or delivery and sign “Received in good condition” without actually opening or inspecting it, you are silently signing away your right to complain later.
That little phrase looks harmless but in law, it’s powerful. It’s called acknowledgment of satisfaction, and it carries legal consequences.

Once your signature is there, the law presumes you inspected, accepted, and were satisfied with the state of the goods. Even if the item inside was damaged, incomplete, or entirely different, your signature speaks louder than your later complaint.
Most people make this mistake with:

🥢 Courier deliveries (especially electronics, phones, gadgets)
🥢 Office or business supplies
🥢 Furniture and appliances delivered from stores
Construction or renovation materials

Here’s the problem once you sign, the seller or courier now has written proof that you confirmed everything was fine. If you return the next day to complain that the television screen was cracked or the parts were missing, they’ll simply show that paper with your signature “Received in good condition.” Case closed.

The law won’t pity you; it will say, “You had a duty to inspect.”
It’s part of what lawyers call the doctrine of acceptance meaning, once you accept goods, you are bound by that acceptance. Unless you can prove fraud or hidden defects, your right to reject or demand compensation is gone.

So, here’s what to do next time a delivery arrives:

🥢 Don’t rush. Inspect before signing.
Open the package, test the product if possible, and confirm everything matches what you paid for.
🥢 Note any defect beside your signature.
Write things like “Received but outer carton torn” or “Received with scratch on surface.” That short note protects you legally.
🥢 If you’re unsure, sign “Received subject to inspection.”
That phrase keeps your right open until you’ve fully checked the item.
🥢 If the delivery person pressures you, stand your ground.

It’s your property and your money not theirs. You have the right to inspect before acknowledging receipt. In law, what you sign becomes your voice, and your voice can either defend you or betray you.

Don’t let haste silence your rights. It’s better to offend a delivery man than to lose your refund.

Next time you see that paper, remember your pen is your witness.
