Recording Techniques.(Knowing your sound and your voice).

1.You can't fix the vocalist techniques as a producer.

You only need to act as a producer to some degree, but what you can't do is teach a singer how to sing within 5mins.

As a singer before you hit the recording boot, you're expected to have done your vocal warm up excises.

2. DON'T LET THE VOCALIST "EAT THE MIC"

It's absolutely wrong that the closer you're to the microphone the better the vocal recording becomes.

Learn to record your vocals some inches away from the microphone which helps in creating smooth and round sounding vocals.

This is what happens when you're too close to the microphone.

√The Booming Proximity Effect
√Crazy Loud Sibilance and Plosives
√Clipping over the Mic's SPL Threshold
√Humidity Damage to the Mic's Diaphragm

These are some of the reasons why your vocals doesn't sound smooth at the end of the mix.

3. LIGHTLY COMPRESS TO AVOID DISTORTION & CLIPPING

I know we're all familiar with the popular ideology of recording vocals dry then applying effects during the mixing stage.

I recommend you apply a bit of compression during the recording stage of 3:1 ratio of compression at a higher threshold to avoid clipping and any sudden loud peaks.

4. Decouple your microphone from the ground.

I'm not saying you shouldn't connect your microphone to a stand cos the stand is still going to be on the floor.

To avoid low frequency rumble that may end up in your recording.

The first thing you need to make sure you're using is a shockmount. This device helps to suspend your microphone in the air with rubber bands which will help eliminates these vibrations before they hit the microphone.

NB: As a recording engineer it is important for you to be very observant while recording especially taking note of your db meter for healthy recording and also making sure you give more room for serval takes so as to pick the best take at the end of the day. (Avoid clipping vocals during recording sessions).

As an artiste, the recording booth is not a rehearsal ground, you ought to have done all your vocal warm up excises before hitting the recording booth, when you starting practicing during your recording session, you tend to kill the vibe and more money will be spent on time. Be smart
