Here are 3 core pillars that distinguish a godly marriage:
1. A Threefold Cord (Christ at the Center)
Unlike secular marriages which are a two-party contract, a godly marriage is a covenant witnessed by God.
“A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4:12)
In a godly marriage, both individuals look to Jesus first. When one spouse stumbles, they don't pull each other down; Christ holds the rope. The goal of the marriage is not just happiness, but *holiness*—reflecting the gospel to the world.
2. Sacrificial Love and Respect (Agape over Eros)
Worldly love is often conditional (based on feelings or what the other person gives you). Godly love is a decision patterned after Christ.
Husbands: Called to agape love—self-sacrificing leadership. “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25). This means dying to selfishness daily.
Wives: Called to deep respect. “The wife must respect her husband” (Ephesians 5:33). This isn’t blind obedience, but honoring his God-given role as servant-leader.
3. Radical Forgiveness and Grace:
A godly marriage is not one without conflict, but one without condemnation. Because both spouses are sinners, forgiveness isn't optional—it’s the currency of the relationship.
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” (Colossians 3:13)
This creates a "safe" environment. You don't have to perform for acceptance; you are already fully known and fully loved, mirroring the grace found in the Gospel
