On April 12, 2025, the Full Moon, also known as the "Pink Moon," will be an exciting event as it will occult Spica, one of the brightest stars in the sky, located in the constellation Virgo. This blue giant, approximately 260 light-years away, will be briefly hidden by the Moon, offering a rare and beautiful celestial spectacle. The Pink Moon will reach its peak illumination at 8:22 p.m. EDT, though the occultation of Spica will be visible to observers in parts of Central and South America, as well as South Africa. This astronomical event is significant not just because of the moon's rarity, but also because the Pink Moon gets its name from the early spring bloom of the moss phlox flower, not its color. As the Moon obscures Spica, stargazers will have a unique opportunity to witness this interplay between our natural satellite and one of the brightest stars in the sky.

Welcome Home: NASA Astronauts Return After Unexpected Nine-Month Space Odyssey

NASA astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Suni” Williams have safely returned to Earth after an unplanned nine-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Originally slated for just eight days, their stay was extended due to technical issues with their return spacecraft.

Mission Overview:
• Launch Date: June 2024
• Original Mission Duration: 8 days
• Actual Duration: Approximately 9 months
• Return Date: March 18, 2025
• Return Vehicle: SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule
• Splashdown Location: Off the coast of Tallahassee, Florida

Extended Stay Details:

The mission’s extension was necessitated by propulsion problems with the Boeing-developed Starliner spacecraft, initially intended for their return. To ensure crew safety, NASA opted to keep Wilmore and Williams on the ISS until a reliable return solution was available.

In-Flight Achievements:

During their prolonged stay, the astronauts:
• Conducted approximately 150 scientific experiments to advance human space exploration.
• Performed maintenance tasks critical to the station’s operations.
• Participated in spacewalks, with Williams reclaiming her title for the most spacewalking time by a female astronaut.

Crew’s Return:

Upon re-entry, the Crew Dragon capsule experienced high temperatures and rapid deceleration before a successful splashdown. Recovery teams promptly assisted the astronauts, who were reported to be in good spirits. They will undergo medical evaluations and a rehabilitation period to readjust to Earth’s gravity.

Notable Moments:

A heartwarming sight accompanied their return: a pod of dolphins surrounded the capsule shortly after splashdown, as captured in drone footage.

Looking Ahead:

This mission underscores the unpredictability of space travel and the resilience of astronauts. NASA continues to collaborate with commercial partners like SpaceX and Boeing to ensure the safety and success of future missions.
