WHEN DOES SALARY NEGOTIATION START?
Salary negotiation can be one of the most important factors in whether or not you accept a specific job. It can also be the most difficult part of the job search. When employers do invite you back after first, second, third or fourth interviews, means if you like them and they increasingly like you, a job offer will be made.
Here comes the inevitably question in the mind of the two main actors: employer and job seeker. How much is this person going to cost me? Says the employer. And the job seeker. How much does this job pay?
Most Employers do not mention how much to pay, hoping they will be able to get you for less, they start lower than they’re ultimately willing to go. This creates a range and that range is what salary negotiation is all about. If a range is involved, then you have every right to try to negotiate a higher salary within that range.
The Employer’s goal is to save money, if possible. Your goal is to bring home to your family, partner or your own household, the best salary that you can, for the work you will be doing. Nothing is wrong with the goals of either of you, where the Employer starts lower salary negotiation is proper and expected.
Employers want to pay the least they can…. You want them to pay you the most they can. In this contest, whosoever mentions a salary first, generally loses at last. Some employers do mention right from start, the top figure they are willing to pay for the position, that means the end of any salary negotiation, and most employers don’t.
