Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) is a common condition where the force of blood against the walls of the arteries is consistently too high. Over time, it can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, and other health issues. It is often called a “silent killer” because many people experience no obvious symptoms.
Causes of Hypertension
Hypertension can develop due to a combination of lifestyle and genetic factors. Common causes include:
- Unhealthy diet (high salt/sodium intake, low fruits and vegetables)
- Obesity or being overweight
- Physical inactivity
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Smoking
- Chronic stress
- Family history (genetics)
- Underlying conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, or hormonal disorders
Treatment and Management
Managing hypertension usually involves lifestyle changes and, in some cases, medication:
- Healthy eating (e.g., DASH diet – rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains)
- Reducing salt intake
- Regular physical activity (at least 30 minutes most days)
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Limiting alcohol and avoiding smoking
- Stress management (meditation, relaxation techniques)
- Medications (such as diuretics, ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers) prescribed by a doctor when necessary
Early detection and consistent management are key to preventing complications.
