The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has taken a major leap in intelligence-led border management with the deployment of an INTERPOL Data Centre that enables officers to instantly detect stolen vehicles and other transported assets entering Nigeria from any part of the world.

The facility, installed at the Service Headquarters in Abuja, connects the NCS to INTERPOL's global criminal intelligence network, providing real-time access to international databases containing information on stolen vehicles, vessels, cargo, travel documents, parcels and other assets linked to criminal activities.

Speaking during a demonstration of the facility, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, described the development as a major milestone in the Service's ongoing technology-driven transformation and intelligence-led enforcement strategy.

A court in eastern China has sentenced a former senior city official to death after convicting him of accepting more than 2.2 billion yuan (about $325 million) in bribes over a 30-year period, in one of the country's biggest corruption cases in recent years.

The former official, Yang Youlin, 69, was found guilty of bribery, embezzlement, abuse of power and money laundering by the Intermediate People's Court in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province.

According to Chinese state media, Yang exploited several official positions he held in Nanjing between 1993 and 2023 to facilitate engineering contracts, land transfers and financing approvals in exchange for huge sums of money and other valuables.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) have intensified their collaboration to advance the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), with renewed commitments to strengthen customs cooperation, simplify cross-border trade and unlock Africa's vast economic potential.



The renewed partnership was reaffirmed during a working visit by the President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, Dr George Elombi, to the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, at the Service Headquarters in Abuja last Wednesday 1 July, 2026.



The meeting provided an opportunity for both institutions to assess the progress made under their existing collaboration and chart a new course for initiatives aimed at improving trade facilitation, harmonising customs procedures and enhancing regional connectivity across the continent.
