Ace Broadcaster Akeem Akintunde Dies After Protracted Illness

Akeem Akintunde, former Director of Programmes at Ogun State Television (OGTV) and former Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State chapter, has died after a prolonged illness.

He passed away on Wednesday night, according to a confirmation by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council.

In a statement issued by the Council’s Secretary, Bunmi Adigun, the NUJ described Akintunde’s passing as a major loss to the journalism community in Ogun State and beyond, noting that his death marks the end of a distinguished era in broadcasting and sports reporting.

“His passage tonight after a protracted illness marks the end of a remarkable career defined by dedication, excellence, and an unwavering passion for journalism and sports,” the statement said.

Akintunde was widely respected within media circles as a seasoned broadcaster and sports journalist whose depth of knowledge and professional commitment earned him admiration among colleagues and younger practitioners. He was often described by associates as a repository of broadcasting experience and sports expertise, remaining actively engaged in the profession until his final days.

During his tenure as Director of Programmes at OGTV, Akintunde was credited with driving significant programming development and mentoring a generation of broadcasters. His leadership and editorial influence were regarded as some of the most impactful in the station’s history.

The NUJ called on journalists and associates to keep the late broadcaster’s family in their thoughts and prayers, describing his death as an irreparable loss to the profession.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
