It now feels like fasting has become something forced rather than a personal act of worship. I genuinely struggle with organised religion, especially when it begins to look more like enforcement than faith. Why should the Hisbah arrest fellow Muslims simply because they are seen eating during a fast?
Fasting, particularly during Ramadan, is meant to be an act of devotion between an individual and God.
It is rooted in intention, discipline, and personal conviction, not fear of punishment or public humiliation. When religious observance shifts from voluntary worship to public policing, it risks losing its spiritual meaning.
Faith should inspire transformation from within, not compliance through coercion. While communities may uphold shared values, personal religious duties should ultimately remain a matter of conscience. Many people are already carrying private struggles, health issues, doubts, and personal battles that others cannot see. Compassion and understanding often reflect the true spirit of religion far better than force ever can.
