HOW TO PREPARE A POULTRY HOUSE BEFORE BRINGING IN NEW CHICKS 🐥 🐣 🐥 🐣 🐣 🐣 🐥 🐥

Preparing the poultry house is one of the most important steps in poultry farming. In my opinion, it is the foundation of a successful poultry business. Even if you buy the healthiest chicks and the best feed, poor housing can lead to disease, stress, slow growth, and even high mortality.
I like to compare it to human life. Just as we all need a clean, safe, and comfortable place to sleep after a long day's work, chickens also deserve a clean, dry, and spacious environment where they can eat, rest, and grow.
One mistake many beginners make is buying more chicks than their poultry house can comfortably accommodate. They assume that having more birds means making more profit. In reality, overcrowding often leads to stress, disease outbreaks, poor growth, and unnecessary losses.
My advice is simple:
Do not stock birds based on how much money you have. Stock them based on the space you have available.
Healthy chickens need enough room to move around freely, stretch their wings, eat without competition, and rest comfortably. When birds are crowded together, they become stressed, and stressed birds are more likely to fall sick.
If your space is limited, make good use of it by designing your poultry house efficiently. Arrange feeders and drinkers properly, ensure there is adequate ventilation, and, where appropriate, make use of raised systems or other housing designs that maximize the available space while still giving the birds room to move.
A well-prepared poultry house should have:
A clean and dry floor.
Good ventilation.
Enough space for the number of birds.
Clean feeders and drinkers.
Proper lighting.
Protection from predators.
Restricted access to visitors to reduce the risk of disease.
Remember, a poultry house is not just a shelter. It is the birds' home. The healthier and more comfortable their home is, the better they will perform.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CHARCOAL AND WOOD ASH IN POULTRY FARMING EVERY FARMER SHOULD KNOW
MOST POULTRY FARMERS USE CHARCOAL THE WRONG WAY. HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

Hidden Farm Resources Every Poultry Farmer Should Understand

Many poultry farmers have heard about mixing charcoal or wood ash into feed or water, but few understand when it is beneficial, when it is unnecessary, and when it can become harmful.

Today, let’s look at both separately.

PART 1: CHARCOAL

Charcoal has been used in livestock farming for generations. However, not every charcoal is safe.

Only clean charcoal made from untreated wood should ever be considered around poultry. Never use charcoal from painted wood, chemically treated wood, plywood, plastics, rubber, or charcoal containing lighter fluid.

What does charcoal do inside the bird?

Charcoal is highly porous.

Because of its tiny pores, it can absorb certain unwanted substances in the digestive tract before they are absorbed into the bloodstream.

It may help reduce some toxins, improve gut comfort after digestive disturbances, and absorb certain gases that contribute to bloating.

Activated charcoal is commonly used by veterinarians as an emergency treatment for some poisonings because of this property.

Can charcoal improve digestion?

Some farmers report firmer droppings and reduced digestive discomfort when very small amounts are offered occasionally.

However, charcoal is not a substitute for proper nutrition, vaccination, clean water, or biosecurity.

Can charcoal reduce diarrhoea?

If diarrhoea is caused by mild digestive upset, charcoal may help absorb some irritating substances.

If diarrhoea is caused by bacterial infections, coccidiosis, Newcastle disease, Gumboro, worms, or other diseases, charcoal alone will not solve the problem.

Always identify the actual cause before treatment.

Should charcoal be mixed into drinking water?

Many farmers do this traditionally.

However, there is little scientific evidence that routinely mixing ordinary charcoal powder into drinking water improves bird performance.

In fact, excessive charcoal in water may reduce water quality and can bind some medicines if given at the same time.

If charcoal is used, it is generally safer to provide it separately or in very small amounts with feed rather than continuously in water.

Can charcoal be mixed with feed?

Some farmers include a very small quantity of finely ground clean charcoal in feed.

If used, keep the inclusion low.

A practical guide is about 0.5 to 1% of the feed, which is approximately 5 to 10 grams per kilogram of feed.

Do not use large quantities because charcoal can also bind useful nutrients and reduce feed efficiency.

What age of birds can receive charcoal?

It is better not to introduce charcoal during the first week of life when chicks need maximum nutrient absorption.

If used, introduce only after the first week in small amounts.

For growers and adult layers, occasional use is generally more appropriate than continuous feeding.

Can charcoal improve egg production?

No.

Charcoal does not directly increase egg production.

Good nutrition, proper lighting, genetics, disease prevention, and good management determine egg production.

PART 2: WOOD ASH

Wood ash is completely different from charcoal.

Ash is what remains after charcoal or firewood has completely burned.

Only ash from clean, untreated wood should be used.

Never use ash from burned plastics, painted wood, tyres, charcoal briquettes, or treated timber.

What nutrients does wood ash contain?

Wood ash contains minerals such as calcium and potassium, but the amounts vary greatly depending on the type of wood.

Can ash be mixed into poultry feed?

It is generally not recommended as a regular feed ingredient because the mineral content is inconsistent and excessive amounts may upset the birds’ mineral balance.

Commercial mineral supplements are far more reliable.

Can ash reduce odour in poultry houses?

Yes.

Dry wood ash can help absorb moisture from wet litter.

Since bacteria produce more ammonia in wet litter, keeping litter drier can reduce bad smells.

However, ash should not replace proper litter management.

Regular cleaning, ventilation, and dry bedding remain the best methods.

Can ash improve poultry manure?

Yes.

When used sparingly in litter, ash can contribute minerals to the manure, making it more valuable for crop production.

However, excessive ash can increase the alkalinity of the manure.

Can ash control parasites?

Some farmers use wood ash in dust bathing areas.

Chickens naturally dust bathe to help reduce external parasites such as lice and mites.

Many farmers combine dry sand with a small amount of wood ash for this purpose.

Important precautions

Never overuse charcoal.

Never overuse wood ash.

Never replace veterinary treatment with charcoal.

Never mix charcoal with medications because it can reduce the effectiveness of some drugs.

Always use clean products free from chemicals.

Final Thoughts

Charcoal and wood ash can be useful farm resources when used correctly.

They are management aids, not miracle products.

Healthy birds still depend on quality feed, clean water, vaccination, proper housing, ventilation, biosecurity, and good daily management.

Knowledge helps farmers avoid costly mistakes. Understanding why something works is always better than following tradition blindly.
