The racist incident involving Vinícius Júnior during the Real Madrid vs Benfica match last night is yet another reminder that racism in football is far from gone.

It begs the question: why do some people use race to provoke Black players? Why call a fellow human a “monkey”? Skin color is not a flaw Black or white, it’s simply part of human diversity. For many Black players in Europe, these attacks are not isolated; they are repeated reminders of prejudice that still exists beneath the surface of the beautiful game.

Some argue that ignoring racist taunts denies offenders the reaction they seek, while others believe speaking up is necessary. Either way, the burden should never fall on the victims. Clubs, authorities, and fans must take responsibility to educate and enforce consequences.

It is baffling that in 2026, being Black can still make someone a target, while the reverse — being white is never questioned. Football should unite people, not divide them. Racism is not a Black problem; it is a human problem. Until society treats it as such, these incidents will continue to stain the sport.

Football deserves better. Humanity demands better.
