The man in history most famously associated with eating himself to death is King Adolf Frederick of Sweden.

He died after consuming an enormous meal on Shrove Tuesday in 1771.


The king's final feast was extravagant, even by royal standards. It occurred on February 12, 1771, and was a traditional pre-Lenten indulgence.

: He ate lobster, caviar, sauerkraut, smoked herring, and champagne.
Dessert: He then consumed 14 servings of his favorite dessert, semla (a sweet, cream-filled bun with almond paste, served in a bowl of hot milk).

Adolf Frederick died later that night, officially from digestive complications.

the immediate cause may have been heart failure or a stroke, his pre-existing poor health and the sheer volume of rich food he consumed were major contributing factors.
