I’ve noticed something. Many people want to start online tutoring, but they keep waiting.

Waiting to get one more certificate. Waiting to buy a laptop. Waiting to have the perfect setup.

So let’s do a simple CHECKLIST

First, 𝒅𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒔𝒖𝒃𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖'𝒓𝒆 𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒅

Do you have an NCE, BSc, BA, HND, OND, or even currently studying and you can confidently teach one or two primary or secondary school subjects?

You’re already qualified to start.

And yes, I know some undergraduates who are already teaching online and earning.

There’s a strategy to positioning yourself properly, even while still in school.

Second question I always get is this, 𝒅𝒐 𝑰 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝑻𝑹𝑪𝑵 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆?

No. A TRCN is important for traditional school systems in Nigeria, but it is not a requirement for you to teach virtual classes independently.

Third, 𝒅𝒐 𝑰 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒂 𝒍𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒐𝒑 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕?

No.

You can start with your phone. Especially if you’re just testing the waters. Many tutors begin with their phones, earn from their first students, and then upgrade to a laptop or tablet.

I also started with my smartphone years back

Start where you are. Grow from there.

𝑫𝒐 𝑰 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒂 𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕?

Not necessarily. Good natural lighting near a window can work perfectly.

If you later decide to buy a ring light, get one that can connect to a power bank so you’re not always stranded during power outages.

𝑫𝒐 𝒊 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒊𝒔𝒆-𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒔𝒆𝒕?

No.

You can start with your earpods or simple earphones. Upgrade when your income grows.

𝑫𝒐 𝒊 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒂 𝒑𝒉𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒃𝒐𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒓?

No.

Virtual teaching uses digital whiteboards. There are tools that allow you to write, draw, solve, and explain clearly without standing in front of a physical board.

𝑺𝒐, 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅?

✅ You need proper training on how to deliver lessons effectively online.

✅ You need to understand how virtual classrooms work.

✅ You need to know how to structure your lessons.

✅ You need to know how to manage students online.

✅ You need to know how to position yourself and get clients.

✅ You need to know how to price yourself confidently.

The truth is, online teaching is a skill. And like every other skill, it can be learned.

You don’t need perfection to start, all you need clarity.

Stop overthinking and start preparing yourself to become a Tech-Savvy online tutor in 2026.
