The Reflective Realms
Me: Baby, I know you're a career woman, but you've to be submissive to me if you want this relationship to work out.
Her: What do you mean? You want to be controlling me?
Me: Control you? How?
Her: Yes, that's what you just said and plan to do to me after marriage.
Me: could you please stop this and let me set the record straight?
Her: Okay, Mr. SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT
Me: This is...

In today's society, the term "submission" has become synonymous with control, oppression, and domination. Unfortunately, this misunderstanding has led to a surge in broken homes, marriages, and single motherhood, ultimately affecting the youth.
There's a Distinction Between Submission and Control
Submission is often misconstrued as a sign of weakness or inferiority. However, in the context of a healthy relationship, submission means:
- Respect
- Trust
- Partnership
- Cooperation
Control, on the other hand, implies:
- Manipulation
- Domination
- Oppression
- Exploitation
The two concepts are mutually exclusive.
One of the Quranic verses that discuss submission in relationships is Qur'an 4:34 which goes thus:
"Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means. Therefore, the righteous women are obedient (to Allah and to their husbands), and guard in their husband's absence what Allah orders them to guard (e.g., their chastity, their husband's property)."
However, it's essential to understand this verse emphasizes mutual responsibility and cooperation. Also, "Obedient" here means respecting and supporting each other.
The Biblical Perspective
The Bible teaches mutual submission between husbands and wives (Ephesians 5:21). This reciprocal submission fosters a loving, supportive partnership.
In both Islamic and Christian relationships, submission is about:
- Mutual respect
- Cooperation
- Trust
- Support
Not control or domination.
Now, let's discuss THE SOCIETAL IMPACT
The misconception of submission has far-reaching consequences such as:
β’Β°β’ Broken homes and marriages
β’Β°β’ High rate of single motherhood
β’Β°β’ Emotional scars for children
β’Β°β’ Distorted view of relationships among youth
Babe, It's time to redefine submission in its proper context and this can only be done when we
β’Β°β’ Emphasize mutual respect and trust in our relationship
β’Β°β’ Encourage open communication in our relationship
β’Β°β’ Foster a culture of cooperation and teamwork in our relationship
β’Β°β’ And, Promote healthy relationship role modeling for youth
Let's work together to...
β Educate and enlighten women and men about the true meaning of submission
β Encourage healthy relationships built on mutual respect and trust
βSupport initiatives promoting strong family values
βMentor youth to understand the importance of healthy relationships
By reclaiming the true meaning of submission, we can strengthen marriages and families, empower women and men to build healthy relationships, and create a positive impact on our society
