Why Do So Many Marriages Break Down So Quickly?

It’s heartbreaking to see how often couples enter marriage full of love and promise, only to have things fall apart within a short time. Why does this happen so often?

One major reason is unrealistic expectations. Many people go into marriage believing it will be like a fairytale (beauty and the beast) constant romance, no arguments, smooth sailing. But marriage is real life. It requires patience, effort, compromise, and maturity. When reality hits bills, responsibilities, habits, differences in values it can feel overwhelming.

Another reason is lack of communication. A lot of couples never learn how to talk openly about difficult topics. Instead of discussing needs, frustrations, or boundaries, they avoid or bottle things up. This leads to resentment, emotional distance, or worse seeking connection outside the marriage.

Some partners break vows because they never fully understood the weight of those promises. Love and lust can feel strong in the moment, but commitment means sticking around even when things aren’t perfect. Without a strong foundation of friendship, trust, and mutual respect, it’s easy to stray or give up when the honeymoon phase fades.

And let’s be honest some people rush into marriage for the wrong reasons: pressure from family, fear of being alone, financial stability, or even to “fix” an already broken relationship. When the motive isn’t genuine love and readiness to grow together, cracks appear fast.

Marriage isn’t a magical fix it’s a journey. It requires two people willing to show up every day, even when it’s hard. So before saying "I do," ask yourself: Am I ready to love this person through change, challenges, and seasons of discomfort? If not, maybe it’s not time yet.

Let’s normalize talking about the work of love and marriage and, not just the wedding day glitz that is like candles in the wind.
