ADELEKE URGES RESIDENTS TO PERFORM THEIR CIVIC WITHOUT FEAR IN THE OSUN CHAIRMANSHIP ELECTION

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, cast his vote today in the ongoing Local Government Elections across the state.

The Governor, who arrived at his polling unit in Sagba/Abogunde Ward 2, Unit 9, Ede, was accredited before exercising his civic duty.

The election, which is expected to determine the leadership at the grassroots level, has witnessed a significant turnout of voters amidst tight security and electoral monitoring.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after casting his vote, Governor Adeleke urged all eligible voters to exercise their franchise peacefully.

He emphasized the importance of grassroots democracy and called on the people to participate actively without fear or intimidation.

The Governor who described the Election process seamless, commended the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSSIEC, for a job well done, encouraging all and sundry to come out and vote peacefully, as this he said is a crucial step in strengthening the nation's democracy at the local level.

Meanwhile, the Osun State chapter of the All Progressive Congress, APC has berated the State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP over an enrolled order granted by an Ilesa High Court presided over Justice Adeyinka Aderibigbe asking the State Independent Electoral Commission to proceed with the planned local government poll .

Reacting in a release made available to Newsmen by the Chairman of APC in Osun State, Mr.Tajudeen Lawal described the court order as “fake and inglorious”, noting that it “a joke taken too far.”

Mr. Lawal emphasized that Nigeria statutes do not prescribe that a lower court should override an Appeal court judgement.

“APC in Osun has therefore called for firmness with which the security agents have been enforcing the February 10, 2025 Court of Appeal judgement that reinstated the cruelly sacked local government political functionaries by Governor Adeleke in 2022,” Mr.Tajudeen Lawal said.

Scores of demonstrators hit the streets of Abuja on Monday to demand the immediate dismissal of the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, Mele Kyari, over the lingering fuel scarcity bedevilling the country.

The protest comes on the heels of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited’s confession that its substantial debt to suppliers is endangering the sustainable fuel supply.

Chanting solidarity songs and displaying several banners that read ‘We are tired of fuel scarcity and stories on why refineries are not working, ‘No direction under Kyari’ and ‘We want accountability in the affairs of NNPCL’, the demonstrators lamented that Kyari’s tenure was marked by a dismal scorecard that raises more questions than answers.

The aggrieved youths, who made the appeal at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, expressed disappointment over the inaction of the commission under successive governments.

Amid the controversial $6 billion debt being owed to petrol suppliers by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, a Northern group, Arewa Democratic Front, ADF, has urged President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action.

In a statement made available to DAILY POST on Monday, the ADF, through its National Coordinator, Engr. Mustafa Yusuf and the National Secretary, Malam Muazu Haruna said Nigerians had suffered enough under the Mele Kyari-led NNPCL.

The Arewa group said it was compelled to speak out against the current fuel crisis and the disastrous mismanagement of the petroleum sector under the NNPCL.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, ordered the prison remand of 10 activists arrested in connection with the recent hunger protest in the country. But the civil rights group, Amnesty International, condemned the trial of the prosecution by the Federal Government, describing the charges as trumped-up and sham.

Justice Emeka Nwite ordered that the defendants, including a pregnant woman, Angel Innocent, be remanded in Kuje and Suleja correctional centres till September 11 for the hearing of their bail applications.

Apart from Innocent, who claimed to be pregnant, the other defendants are Michael Adaramoye, alias Lenin; Adeyemi Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Opaluwa Simon, Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello, Nuradeen Khakis and Abdusalam Zubairu.

++LG poll: Osun electoral body begins contestants’ certificate verification - Punch

The Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, Mr Hasim Abioye, on Monday, inaugurated a committee to verify the certificates and other documents of contestants participating in the forthcoming local government elections in the state. Addressing the committee members shortly before the inauguration of the 18-member group, headed by Mr Abdul-Lateef Olayanju in Osogbo,Osun State, Abioye stated that the committee would examine the documents and other papers submitted by political parties and their candidates for the elections.

The OSSIEC Chairman noted that the high-level committee comprised individuals of high integrity who have served and continue to serve their country in various capacities.

Expressing confidence in the committee’s ability to fulfil its mandate, Abioye also mentioned that the report of the exercise would be made public.

House of Representatives member Alhassan Ado Doguwa (APC, Doguwa/Tudun Wada federal constituency) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct elections for the third tier of government to ensure transparency.

In a statement that he made available to journalists on Monday, the lawmaker advocated the need to deepen democracy at the grassroots, insisting that the only way to do that is for the national electoral umpire to take charge.

Some laws governing the local government administration needed to be reviewed, according to Doguwa, who is the chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum (Downstream).

He expressed hope that a functional local government system would curb the ever-worsening urban migration.

++Headmaster arrested for unlawful auctioning of school furniture in Kano - Premium Times

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) has arrested the headmaster of Gaidar Makada Special Primary School in the Kumbotso Local Government Area.

The headmaster, whose name was withheld, was accused of unlawfully auctioning government assets.

PCACC’s spokesperson, Kabir Abba, said the arrest followed a complaint that the headmaster was selling the school’s vital assets when the state government is struggling to address the gaps in the provision of furniture at public schools.

Mr Abba said that the commission was investigating the issue and trying to recover the stolen furniture.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has asked HND graduates not to hold it responsible for their inability to participate in the recent National Youth Service Corps.

The board was responding to claims by the prospective NYSC candidates that it was responsible for their inability to participate in the mandatory one-year NYSC scheme.

“It is important to emphasize that JAMB has no involvement, authority, or control over the admissions process for HND candidates, “the board explained in a statement, on Monday, by its spokesman, Fabian Benjamin.

++Resident doctors resume work after one week of strike action - Daily Post

Members of the Association of Resident Doctors across the country, on Monday, resumed duty after a one-week strike action to press the federal authorities for the release of two of their members in kidnappers captivity.

Three members were initially abducted, but one was later released after payment of ransom.

The victims have so far spent eight months, according to credible sources.

In a telephone chat with DAILY POST in Ilorin on Monday, the chairman of the association at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital branch, Dr Muhammed Yusuf, said the association is giving the government another three-week ultimatum to resolve the issue.

++Ogun: Suspected kidnapper r**es, machete 17 years old girl to death - Daily Post

The Ogun State Police Command on Monday confirmed the death of 17-year-old Habeebah Akinsanya who was allegedly kidnapped in the Kemta area of the state.

The deceased was reported missing by her father, Akinsanya Aremu, a So Safe Corps, to the Kemta Police Division at about 9:30pm on Friday.

Habeebah, a student at Lisabi Grammar School in Abeokuta, will be entering SS3 on September 16 and turning 17 in October.

DAILY POST reports that the Habeebah was found r**ed before being macheted to death on Sunday at her father’s farm around Mile 6, a community that is a few metres away from Ogun State Television, Abeokuta.

The Divisional Police Officer of Kemta Division, Abeokuta, Olawale Famobuwa confirmed the incident on Monday, saying the division had begun investigation.
