MEMORY VERSE: "And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment". 1 Chronicles 12:32

BIBLE PASSAGE: Daniel 2:20–23
20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:
22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter.

INTRODUCTION: Issachar was the fifth son of Jacob and Leah, and the ninth son overall of the patriarch (Genesis 30:17–18). He had four sons (Genesis 46:13), and went with his father to Egypt, where he died and was buried. Afterwards, his descendants formed one of the tribes of Israel. By the end of the wanderings of Israel through the Sinai desert, they numbered 64,300 fighting men (Numbers 26:23–25). What is most evident is that by the time of David, they were known supremely for their wisdom. They understood the “signs of the times” and how best to live in light of them (1 Chronicles 7:1–5; 12:32).

LESSON OUTLINES
1. UNDERSTAND TIMES AND SEASONS.
2. KNOW WHAT TO DO.

UNDERSTAND TIMES AND SEASONS
The Bible tells us that there are various seasons (Genesis 8:22; Ecclesiastes 3:1–8). Times and seasons are in God’s hands and can change (Daniel 2:21a). To navigate times and seasons, God gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding (Daniel 2:21c). He reveals the deep and secret things to His children (Deuteronomy 29:29; Daniel 2:22). The men of Issachar had an understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do. It takes a mature believer to discern the times (Hebrews 5:14).

“Understanding the times” also refers to having insight into current circumstances, trends, and seasons in which we live (Romans 13:11). It involves being aware of the cultural, political, social and spiritual climate (Daniel 2:27–28), and recognising opportunities and challenges (1 Timothy 4:1–3).

KNOW WHAT TO DO
The men of Issachar understood the signs of the times and knew how to live in the light of them. To know what to do is to be full of ideas and skills, vision-driven, and strategic. Also, it is the ability to:
1. Make informed decisions: Go back to school (get a degree, master’s, PhD), attend conferences, learn a trade, acquire a skill, etc. (Genesis 26:1–3).

2. Respond appropriately to challenges and opportunities (Genesis 26:12–22; Matthew 2:13–14; John 2:3–5).

3. Be wise and authentic: live a life of impact for the cause of Christ (1 Peter 3:10–11).

4. Engage in kingdom activities (Matthew 6:33).

5. Fulfil your purpose and calling (John 18:37).

CONCLUSION: The men of Issachar were sought after for counsel on political and spiritual matters and they played an important role in the leadership of Israel. You can be like them.

2. Identify three things to do at a time.

BIBLE TEXT: JOHN 15:1-8

[1]I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
[2]Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
[3]Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
[4]Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
[5]I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
[6]If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

[8]Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

MEMORY VERSE: "Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God." 2 Timothy 3:4

BIBLE PASSAGE: 2 PETER 2:13-14

[13]And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;
[14]Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:

INTRODUCTION: Lovers of pleasures are those who have invariably turned sensual pleasures, sensual gratifications, etc. to their god and there-fore love and serve them instead of God. These people live for pleasure without restraints and are inordinately concerned with their interests above others. Paul, in 2 Timothy 3:1-4 states, lovers of pleasures as a sign of the last days. He used the Greek word "philodonos" meaning "lovers of plea-sures" to emphasise that society will become en-grossed and obsessed with the pursuit of their comfort, happiness and pleasure. We shall exam-ine the dangers of sensual pleasures and remind ourselves of how to bring pleasure to God.

OUTLINE
1. DANGERS OF SENSUAL PLEASURES
2. CREATED FOR GOD'S PLEASURE

DANGERS OF SENSUAL PLEASURES
Sensual pleasure is a carnal or worldly pleasure that naturally extinguishes all love and sense of God (2 Timothy 3:4-5). These fleshly lusts por tend a lot of threats to its practitioners and tho around them. Such fleshly lusts include the fact that the word of God has no root in them because of the cares of this world and love for the plea-sures of life (Luke 8:14). They are careless in the way they live (Isaiah 47:8). This incessant love for pleasures often results in poverty (Proverbs 21:17). They are sold out to lustful desires (Titus 3:3). A blind eye is turned to God's judgement (Romans 1:32). These people will be judged be-cause they take pleasure in sin (2 Thessalonians 2:12; 1 John 5:17a). It is rather unfortunate that these people are dead while they live (Romans 8:6; 1Timothy 5:6). The reward of unrighteous-ness awaits them (2 Peter 2:13).

Furthermore, those who take pleasure in fleshly lusts are not subject to God's law (Romans 8:7), their growth is stunted as they refuse to leave the baby stage and still exhibit other carnal traits like strife, envy, etc. (1 Corinthians 3:1-3), they are self-gratifiers (Philippians 2:21) who run after mundane and earthly things and their god is their belly (Philippians 3:18-19; Numbers 11:4). When every man is eager only for what he can get, and anxious to keep what he has, it makes men dan-gerous to one another.

CREATED FOR GOD'S PLEASURE
Revelation 4:11 discloses that we were created for God's pleasure and we are to give Him glory and honour all the time. One of the ways to give God glory is to acknowledge Him in all that we do (Proverbs 3:6; Jeremiah 9:23-24); when this is done in complete obedience, it is accompanied by prosperity (Job 36:11). We honour God wh we surrender totally to Him (Psalm 37:5; 55:22).
We also give pleasure to God when we do the fol-lowing: live uprightly (1 Chronicles 29:17); stay away from anything that defiles (Ezra 10:11); trust Him (Psalm 36:7-8); do His will (Psalm 103:21); seek to know Him for His greatness (Psalm 111:2); fear Him and hope in His mercy (Psalm 147:10-11).

CONCLUSION: Love God and serve Him passion-ately; carnal pleasure is enmity against God. Love not the world!

QUESTIONS
1. Mention three dangers of sensual pleasures.
2. In what ways can we bring pleasure to God?

"But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him"Esther 2:12

BIBLE TEXT: ESTHER 1:10-19

[10]On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
[11]To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.
[12]But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.
[13]Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king's manner toward all that knew law and judgment:
[14]And the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king's face, and which sat the first in the kingdom;)
[15]What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
[16]And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.
[17]For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
[18]Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king's princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.
[19]If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
