What is an Ulcer?
An ulcer is a sore or lesion that develops on the lining of the stomach, small intestine, or esophagus. Ulcers can be acute or chronic.

Types of Ulcers
1. *Gastric Ulcer*: Occurs in the stomach lining.
2. *Duodenal Ulcer*: Occurs in the first part of the small intestine (duodenum).
3. *Esophageal Ulcer*: Occurs in the esophagus.
4. *Stress Ulcer*: Caused by physical stress, such as severe illness or injury.

Causes
1. *Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) Bacteria*: A common cause of stomach ulcers.
2. *Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)*: Pain relievers like aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen can irritate the stomach lining.
3. *Acid Production*: Excessive acid production in the stomach can cause ulcers.
4. *Other Factors*: Stress, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption can contribute to ulcer development.

Symptoms
1. *Abdominal Pain*: Burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen.
2. *Nausea and Vomiting*: Mayoccur, especially after eating.
3. *Bleeding*: Vomiting blood or black, tarry stools.
4. *Weight Loss*: Unintentional weight loss due to reduced appetite.

Diagnosis
1. *Endoscopy*: A flexible tube with a camera is inserted through the mouth to visualize the stomach lining.
2. *Barium Swallow*: A contrast agent is swallowed to visualize the upper digestive tract on X-rays.
3. *Blood Tests*: To check for H. pylori infection or anemia.
