​In the early 13th century, the remnants of the Kangaba kingdom were crushed under the iron fist of Soumaoro Kanté, the notorious ruler of the Sosso Kingdom. History remembers Soumaoro not just as a king, but as a master sorcerer. Legend has it that he wore robes made of human skin and kept the severed heads of defeated kings in a secret chamber to harness their dark powers.
​Soumaoro believed he had successfully eliminated all threats to his throne by executing all the princes of Kangaba. He spared only one: a young, sickly boy named Sundiata Keita, who was paralyzed and couldn't even walk. Soumaoro mocked him, believing a crippled child could never challenge his mystical regime.
​But Soumaoro made a fatal mistake. ❌
​Driven by sheer will and the destiny of his ancestors, Sundiata miraculously learned to walk using a heavy iron rod. As he grew, so did his legend. He didn't just build an army; he united the fractured local clans and formed a highly sophisticated espionage network to study his enemy.
​Sundiata discovered that Soumaoro’s mystical invincibility relied on a specific taboo (a tana). In the legendary Battle of Kirina (c. 1235), Sundiata’s forces clashed with Soumaoro’s terrifying army. Using a specially crafted arrow tipped with the spur of a white rooster—the secret weapon that neutralized the Sorcerer King’s magic—Sundiata struck Soumaoro, causing him to panic and flee into the mountains, never to be seen again.
​With the Sorcerer King gone, Sundiata Keita was crowned the first Mansa (Emperor) of Mali. He laid down the Kurukan Fuga, one of the world's earliest oral constitutions
